Then and Now: The Sad Decline of Liberty Stadium, Ibadan

A historic photograph taken in 1999 at the iconic Liberty Stadium—now known as Obafemi Awolowo Stadium—captures a moment when the arena proudly hosted the Group C match between Saudi Arabia and Mexico during the 1999 FIFA World Youth Championship.

Today, that same stadium tells a very different and heartbreaking story.

Once a proud symbol of Nigerian sporting excellence, the stadium located along Liberty Road, Ring Road in Ibadan has sadly fallen into severe neglect.

What was once a vibrant centre of sporting glory has become a painful reminder of how national sporting monuments can fade without proper care.

Originally opened in 1960 by Obafemi Awolowo, the facility was named Liberty Stadium to commemorate Nigeria’s independence.

With a seating capacity of about 25,000, it quickly became one of the most celebrated sporting venues in Africa.

The historic arena achieved continental prominence in 1963, when it hosted Africa’s first-ever world boxing title fight. It later served as one of the host venues for the 1980 African Cup of Nations, including the unforgettable semi-final clash between Algeria and Egypt that drew fans from across the continent.

Nearly four decades later, the stadium again welcomed the global football community when Nigeria hosted the 1999 FIFA World Youth Championship.

Liberty Stadium staged all Group C matches, a Round of 16 fixture, and a quarter-final match, reinforcing its reputation as one of the country’s premier sporting venues.

However, what remains today is a shadow of that glorious past.

The once electrifying stadium that echoed with cheers, passion, and unforgettable sporting moments now stands largely abandoned—its facilities deteriorating after years of neglect.

Many Nigerians, sports enthusiasts, and historians have expressed deep concern over the alarming state of this national sporting treasure.
ATMSports therefore calls on the Federal Government and relevant authorities to urgently intervene in restoring the stadium.

Reviving this historic facility will not only preserve an important part of Nigeria’s sporting heritage but also create opportunities for youth development, sports tourism, and community engagement.

Liberty Stadium once welcomed the world. It deserves to rise again.
