Anglican Diocese of Ibadan Crowned Champions of Daddy G.O’s Cup 2026

It was a colourful and spiritually uplifting atmosphere at the Redeemed Christian Church of God Camp ground, Mowe, Ogun State, on Friday, March 13, 2026, as the grand finale of the Daddy G.O’s Cup football tournament was held in celebration of the 84th birthday of the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Enoch Adejare Adeboye.

The football tournament, organized by the Directorate of Sports of the Redeemed Christian Church of God under the leadership of Professor Raimi Moronfolu—recently elected President of the Nigeria Society for Sports Management—was conceived as a platform to celebrate the revered cleric while promoting youth engagement, unity, and healthy competition among Christian denominations.

The competition, held from March 3 to March 13, 2026, featured four participating teams: the Redeemed Christian Church of God (Dove FC), the Anglican Diocese of Ibadan, the Apostolic Church, and the Foursquare Gospel Church. The teams competed in a round-robin format leading to the highly anticipated final encounter.

The final match saw the host team, Dove FC of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, face a determined Anglican Diocese of Ibadan side.

The match commenced shortly after the Chairman of the Occasion, Pastor Tonye Patrick Cole, performed the ceremonial kick-off at exactly 2:40 p.m., following the rendition of both the Nigerian National Anthem and the RCCG anthem.

Dove FC struck first in the 17th minute through their dynamic playmaker, Anuoluwapo Abiodun, who donned jersey number nine(9).

His energetic performance throughout the match evoked memories of the playing style of Daniel (The Bull) Amokachi, as he consistently troubled the Anglican defence with relentless attacking runs.

Despite creating several chances, Dove FC could not extend their lead before the halftime whistle by centre referee Mr. Mudashiru Sikiru.

The second half resumed with renewed determination from the Anglican Diocese of Ibadan team, who returned to the pitch with greater intensity despite trailing by a goal. Their persistence paid off in the 61st minute when Kayode Adebanjo unleashed a powerful left-footed strike that beat the Dove FC goalkeeper to restore parity at 1–1.

The equaliser shifted the momentum of the game, turning the encounter into an evenly contested battle as both sides pushed for a decisive goal.

However, after the regulation 90 minutes, neither team could find the winner, forcing the match into a penalty shootout.

In the dramatic shootout, the Anglican Diocese of Ibadan demonstrated composure and clinical finishing, defeating Dove FC 4–2 to emerge champions of the Daddy G.O’s Cup 2026 and claim the giant trophy alongside One Million Naira (1M) cash prize.

A major highlight of the triumph was the tactical brilliance of the Anglican Diocese of Ibadan coach, Omolayo, who was widely celebrated by spectators and commentators as the “Comeback King.” His well-timed and strategic substitutions during the second half proved decisive, injecting renewed energy into the team and ultimately paving the way for their comeback and eventual victory.

Individual awards also crowned the memorable tournament as Foursquare FC received the Fair Play Award, while Favour Agi of the Apostolic Church was named the Best Player of the Tournament. Ayodele Pamilerin of the Anglican Diocese of Ibadan emerged as the tournament’s Highest Goal Scorer, and his teammate Adeniyi Joshua was honoured as the Best Goalkeeper of the Championship.

The event was further dignified by the personal presence of the celebrant, Daddy Enoch Adejare Adeboye, who attended the grand finale to personally present the trophy and awards to the deserving winners rather than delegating the responsibility.

His presence was widely regarded as a great honour to the participating teams and the entire sporting community present.

Following the presentations, Daddy G.O offered heartfelt prayers and blessings for all attendees, their families, well-wishers, and for Nigeria as a nation, bringing the colourful and memorable football celebration to a spiritually uplifting conclusion.
