Morocco Declared AFCON 2025 Champions After CAF Overturns Final Result
Morocco have officially been crowned champions of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations following a dramatic decision by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to overturn the original outcome of the final match against Senegal.

CAF cited violations of Articles 82 and 84 of the AFCON regulations, which stipulate that any team that refuses to continue play or leaves the field without the referee’s permission is deemed to have forfeited the match and is automatically eliminated.
The FRMF emphasized that its appeal was not intended to undermine Senegal’s on-field performance but rather to ensure the proper application of tournament regulations. The federation reaffirmed its commitment to fairness, regulatory compliance, and the integrity of African football competitions.
Despite the ruling, the emotional impact of the original result remains significant. Senegal players had celebrated the victory and even held a trophy parade, reflecting the confusion and controversy surrounding the final outcome.
Controversial Final Marred by Walk-Off Incident
The turning point of the match came when referee Jean-Jacques Ndala awarded a stoppage-time penalty to Morocco following a VAR review of a challenge involving Senegal defender El Hadji Malick Diouf.
The decision followed an earlier disallowed goal for Senegal, which had already heightened tensions.
Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw, reacting angrily, instructed his players to leave the pitch in protest. Former Liverpool forward Sadio Mané remained on the field, urging his teammates to continue the match.
