Nigeria’s growing prominence in international wrestling received a major boost as four Nigerian athletes emerged gold medalists at the 2026 NAIA Women’s Wrestling National Championships in the United States.
The prestigious collegiate tournament featured over 210 wrestlers competing across 10 weight classes, with the Nigerian quartet delivering outstanding performances to dominate their respective divisions.
Leading the gold rush was Christinah Ogunsanya (117 lbs), who set the tone with a commanding display of technical skill and experience. Her impressive run earned her the national title, cementing her status as an NAIA National Champion and All-American in her division.

Reacting to the athletes’ success, Nigerian Women’s National Team Wrestling Coach, Akuh Purity, described the achievement as a testament to the rising influence of Nigerian wrestlers in collegiate wrestling in the United States.
She noted that the victories not only earned the athletes NAIA All-American honours but also brought pride to their respective institutions, Nigeria, and the Nigeria Wrestling Federation.
Purity further credited the success to the visionary leadership of the President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, praising his deliberate and strategic investment in grassroots talent development.
According to her, the achievements underscore the depth and quality of Nigerian wrestling talent on the global stage, while also marking a significant milestone for African representation in NAIA wrestling.
She added that the tournament forms part of the Federation’s evaluation framework and preparation strategy ahead of the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
