Gateway Games 2024: A Resounding Success Beyond Sports

The 22nd National Sports Festival, tagged Gateway Games Ogun 2024, has elicited a wide range of emotions across the state and among sports enthusiasts. Beyond the impressive performances of athletes, the festival has showcased exceptional organization by the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) and garnered praise from the entire Ogun State Government under the leadership of Governor Dapo Abiodun.

The Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Bukola Olopade, has expressed joy and pride in the ongoing festival, highlighting its uniqueness and profitability. Reflecting on his 19-year journey, Olopade recalled facing criticism for his vision but is now vindicated by the event’s success.
“This is the first festival that made a profit, and it’s unique in its own way, infusing culture, diplomacy, and tourism through sports,” he said.

Olopade noted the significant economic impact of the festival on Ogun State, citing the success of the Adire textile industry, which has sold millions of pieces.
“The impact of the National Sports Festival is tremendous on the people of Ogun State. I’m still friends with people who became multi-millionaires from the 2006 edition, and the same thing will happen now,” he assured.
The Director-General emphasized the importance of sports in human development, comparing it to breathing. He stressed that sports are as crucial as technology, healthcare, education, and infrastructure, and urged stakeholders to promote its value.

Olopade thanked Governor Dapo Abiodun and the President of Nigeria for their support in hosting the festival.
“I thank the Governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun, and the President of Nigeria for supporting us in putting together this wonderful event, showcasing Nigeria’s capabilities to the world,” he said.
While there are areas for improvement, the positives of the Gateway Games 2024 far outweigh the negatives, making it a resounding success and a testament to the power of sports to unite and inspire.
