Gara Gombe Pays Tribute to Peter Rufai, Ranks Him Among World’s Best Goalkeepers

The former Chairman of the Gombe State Football Association, Alhaji Gara Gombe, has paid a glowing tribute to the late Peter Rufai, a former Super Eagles goalkeeper. In a statement issued on Thursday, Gombe described Rufai as one of the best goalkeepers Nigeria has ever produced, ranking him alongside world-class goalkeepers such as Iker Casillas, Edwin van der Sar, Oliver Kahn, and others.
Gombe expressed his shock and sadness over Rufai’s demise, praising his legendary career and contributions to Nigerian football. “He is one of the best goalkeepers in the world produced by Nigeria, and I am shocked like many Nigerians over his demise,” Gombe stated.
Gombe also shared a personal experience with Rufai, recalling an incident in 2023 when Rufai invited the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, to his book launch event. Gombe was tasked with drafting a speech for the Emir, which highlighted fundamental issues affecting the development of football in Nigeria. Although the event was postponed, Gombe’s narrative serves as a testament to Rufai’s dedication to the sport.
Peter Rufai, 61, was not only a former Super Eagles goalkeeper but also an icon of sports in Nigeria. He was part of the golden generation that won the AFCON in 1994 and qualified Nigeria for its first-ever World Cup in the USA in 1994. Rufai’s legacy will continue to inspire future generations of footballers and sports enthusiasts.
Gombe’s tribute to Rufai is a fitting tribute to a legendary career and a reminder of the impact he had on Nigerian football.
