Nigeria Dominates 2025 ITTF Africa West Regional Championships

The 2025 ITTF Africa West Regional Championships, held in Lagos, Nigeria, witnessed a resounding performance by the Nigerian national table tennis teams. The men’s team reclaimed the title, while the women’s team extended their dominance in the region.
The Nigerian men’s team, comprising Matthew Kuti, Taiwo Mati, and Abdulbasit Abdulfatai, secured a commanding 3-0 victory over Côte d’Ivoire in the final, booking their spot at the 2025 African Championships in Kigali, Rwanda. This triumph marked a strong comeback for the Nigerian men after narrowly losing the title to Togo in 2024.

The Nigerian women’s team, captained by Ajoke Ojomu, remained unbeaten throughout the tournament, sweeping past Benin Republic, Ghana, and Guinea without dropping a match. Their flawless run secured them a place at the African Championships and reinforced their continued dominance on the regional stage.
Attention now shifts to the singles competitions, which promise intense battles among the region’s top talent. Defending men’s singles champion Oba Oba Kizito of Côte d’Ivoire faces tough challenges from Nigeria’s Taiwo Mati and Matthew Kuti, while the Nigerian women’s squad has dominated their respective groups and will feature in the knockout rounds.
The 2025 ITTF Africa West Regional Championships serve as a key qualifying event for the continental finals in Rwanda. The top three teams and standout singles performers will represent the region at the African Championships in Kigali this October.
The tournament concludes on Saturday, July 19, with champions to be crowned in both men’s and women’s singles categories.
