Gateway Games 2024 Boosts Local Economy

The 22nd National Sports Festival, Gateway Games 2024, is generating significant economic activity in Ogun State.

The event has drawn large crowds of athletes, officials, and spectators, resulting in increased sales for local vendors.

From food to jewelry, vendors are capitalizing on the opportunity to sell their wares to the festival attendees.

The MKO Abiola Sports Complex, Alake Sports Centre, and Babcock University Hostel are bustling with commercial activity.

The Ogun State government is also benefiting financially from the event, with vendors contributing millions of naira in fees. This revenue will contribute to the state’s economic growth.

Mama Ibeji, a food vendor, reported a surge in business since the state contingents arrived in Abeokuta.

“In the last four days, business has been booming,” she said.

However, a jewelry seller from Lagos noted slow sales, but remained optimistic, citing past experiences at National Sports Festivals.

“Business usually starts slow, but it picks up toward the end when athletes receive their allowances,” she said.

As the festival progresses, vendors are hopeful that the influx of attendees will continue to drive sales, showcasing Ogun State’s potential as a hub for sports tourism.

The Gateway Games 2024 is a significant opportunity for the state to demonstrate its capabilities in hosting major sporting events.
