Nigeria Wins Historic Double in Flag Football, Qualifies for 2026 World Championships

Nigeria’s men’s and women’s flag football teams have made history by winning the inaugural IFAF African Flag Football Championships in Cairo, Egypt. The victories qualify both teams directly to the IFAF Flag Football World Championships in 2026.

The Nigerian men’s team edged out hosts Egypt 13-12 in a thrilling final, with the crowd cheering them on at the Club One Stadium in Maadi. The Egyptian team put up a strong fight but ultimately fell short.

The Nigerian women’s team dominated the tournament, defeating Morocco 26-12 in the final. Quarterback Anuoluwapo Bello threw two decisive second-half touchdowns, securing the win for the Nigerian team.

As African champions, both Nigerian teams qualify directly to the IFAF Flag Football World Championships in 2026. The event marked a significant milestone in the development of flag football in Africa, with 11 teams from eight nations participating.

The tournament was held in partnership with the NFL, which is working with IFAF to drive the growth of flag football in Africa. The event also featured coaching education clinics, talent identification sessions, and a continental NFL Flag youth championships.

IFAF President Pierre Trochet praised the tournament’s success, saying, “Every player and official who set foot on the field in Cairo this week can claim a piece of history.” NFL Africa lead Osi Umenyiora added, “It was inspiring to see nations from across the continent come together and showcase the incredible talent of their young athletes.”
