The Champion’s Story: Anuoluwapo Bello’s Journey to Glory

As I sat down with Anuoluwapo Bello, captain of the Nigerian Female Flag Football team, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of excitement and pride.

Fresh from their historic win at the IFAF African Championship in Cairo, Egypt, Anuoluwapo shared with me the story of her journey to becoming a champion.

“I’ll never forget the feeling of holding that championship trophy aloft,” Anuoluwapo said, her eyes sparkling with pride.

“During the final game, I was completely focused on executing our game plan and trusting my teammates.

When we emerged victorious, it felt amazing to know that we had brought the championship title back to Nigeria.

I’m proud to have contributed to this historic moment for our country.

So, what drew Anuoluwapo to flag football?

“I was attracted to the fast-paced and strategic nature of the sport,” she explained.

“I love the speed, agility, and teamwork required in flag football. It’s an exciting way to stay active and challenge myself.

“Anuoluwapo’s background in basketball has also played a significant role in her success in flag football.

“My basketball experience has helped me develop speed, agility, and teamwork skills, which are transferable to flag football,” she said.

“I’ve been able to apply my experience in quick decision-making and reacting to situations on the field.

“Last year, Anuoluwapo had an incredible run in the Showtime League, winning several awards. “It was an unforgettable experience, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to compete at that level,” she said.

“The awards were a testament to the hard work and dedication of my teammates and me.”

So, what sets the Nigerian female flag football team apart?

“Our team’s unity, determination, and resilience set us apart,” Anuoluwapo explained.

“We have a strong bond and a shared passion for the sport, which drives us to succeed.”

As the team looks to 2026, their goal is to build on their African Championship win and make a strong impression on the world stage.

“We’ll focus on continuous improvement, teamwork, and strategy to achieve success in future competitions,” Anuoluwapo said.

Anuoluwapo’s training regimen is key to her success in both flag football and basketball.

“I prioritize training, recovery, and nutrition to stay in top shape for both sports,” she said.

“My regimen includes a mix of cardio, strength training, and flexibility exercises.”

For young athletes looking to follow in Anuoluwapo’s footsteps, she has a simple yet powerful message:

“Stay focused, work hard, and believe in yourself. Pursuing your passions and setting goals can lead to incredible opportunities and achievements.”

As Anuoluwapo looks to the next year, she’s excited for the challenges ahead.

“Personally, I aim to continue growing in flag football and to also make a statement at the world championships next year,” she said.
