Wale Edun Elected President of Nigerian Boxing Federation
The Honourable Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, has been elected as the new President of the Nigerian Boxing Federation (NBF).
The respected economist and passionate boxing enthusiast emerged unopposed, securing all twelve (12) available votes during the federation’s elective congress held on Saturday at the Package B Indoor Sports Hall of the MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.
In his post-election remarks, Mr. Edun expressed gratitude to stakeholders for their confidence and pledged to introduce reforms aimed at revitalizing and modernizing the sport in Nigeria.
“Our goal is to elevate boxing across all levels — from grassroots development to elite competition. We will work to ensure structural reforms that position Nigeria as a continental force in the sport,” Edun stated.
While the presidential position was uncontested, the election for Vice President proved more competitive. Hon. Omonlei Imadu(Yucateco), representing the South-West zone, triumphed over Mighty Mike from the North-Central zone by eight (8) votes to four (4) in a keenly contested poll.
Imadu, known for his long-standing commitment to grassroots boxing development, welcomed Edun’s emergence, describing it as “a new dawn” for the sport in Nigeria.
“The Honourable Minister is deeply passionate about boxing, and his leadership comes at the right time. His track record of supporting grassroots initiatives speaks volumes. I look forward to working closely with him and the board to restore the glory days of Nigerian boxing,” Imadu remarked.
The newly elected Vice President also commended the National Sports Commission (NSC), led by Mallam Shehu Dikko as Chairman and Hon. Bukola Olopade as Director-General, for ensuring a transparent, fair, and credible electoral process.
With Wale Edun now at the helm of the Nigerian Boxing Federation, stakeholders and enthusiasts alike are optimistic that the sport will witness a period of renewal, growth, and international success.
