Budget Retreat: Ojokoro LCDA Legislative Arm Reaffirms Commitment to Timely Budget Passage

The Sixth Legislative Arm of the Ojokoro Local Council Development Area (LCDA) has underscored the importance of timely budget passage as it commenced its annual two-day budget retreat in Lagos.

The retreat, which opened on Monday at the Centre for Women Development (WDC), Agege, Lagos State, brought together councillors from the council’s seven wards, the Deputy Clerk of the House, members of the media, and the keynote speaker
With the theme “Responsibilities of Local Government Legislators,” the programme focused on enhancing legislative efficiency in lawmaking, oversight, and representation, while strengthening budget processes at the grassroots level.

Speaking at the opening session, the Leader of the House, Rt. Hon. Idowu Usman Ipaye, led other lawmakers, including Hon. Adeyemi Babasola, Hon. Sanya Olusegun Olumose, Hon. Prince Taiwo Taofeeq, Hon. Segun Jolaosho, Hon. Bosun Fasasi, and Hon. Keji Shokunbi.

Delivering the keynote address, former Leader of the Ojokoro LCDA Legislative Council, Hon. Osho AbdoulAzziz Kolawole, described the local government legislature as the tier of government closest to the grassroots and a crucial engine for community development.

Hon. Osho noted that in many developed societies, citizens pay considerable attention to their local leaders and mayors because governance at that level has the most direct impact on their daily lives. He stressed that the local council remains the bedrock of community development and must be held accountable as the closest organ of government to the people.

“A nation is built from individual homes and communities. When the local government functions effectively, the larger society benefits,” he stated.

He urged councillors to carry out their responsibilities with diligence and integrity, reminding them of the transient nature of power and the value of honourable service. Drawing from his legislative experience, he encouraged lawmakers to shun corruption and ill-gotten wealth, emphasizing that true fulfilment lies in service and the lasting blessings that accompany it.

Responding on behalf of the legislators, Rt. Hon. Ipaye and other councillors expressed appreciation to the keynote speaker for his insights.

They assured residents of Ojokoro LCDA of their unwavering commitment to prioritising public welfare and ensuring effective legislative delivery.
